Spišská Nová Ves with its more than 750-year long history is an ideal starting point for the lovers of hiking along harsh but picturesque gorges of the Slovak Paradise (Slovenský raj) National Park, for the admirers of the UNESCO World Heritage sites and for those interested in the less spectacular but even more precious Gothic and Iron Routes monuments that can be found in the surrounding Spiš region.
The town features the longest lenticular (spindle-shaped) square in Europe with an unforgettable atmosphere and the highest publicly accessible church tower in Slovakia (87 m high). At the Place of Wishes, which reminds us of the famous gothic bell foundry workshop of Master Konrád (1357), you can express your most secret wishes and send them by ringing a bell to the heavenly heights to be fulfilled. The town has got a unique atmosphere thanks to many architecturally valuable historical buildings which include seven wonders, such as the Town Hall, the Art Noveau building of Reduta and the Provincial House with its so called Levoča gate. One of the four zoological gardens in Slovakia is situated here. Right next to it there is the Monkeyland high rope park. Children can also have fun in Alex park, one of the largest indoor amusement parks in Slovakia or in the experimental gallery called LaborARTorium.
A wide range of cultural and sport events all year round provides sufficient opportunities for a pleasant stay. Attractiveness of the town is enhanced by theatres, a gallery, museums, 3D cinemas, indoor swimming pool and a lido, wellness and fitness facilities, tennis grounds, skittle and bowling alleys, a high rope park, a skate park, an ice hockey stadium or an indoor shooting range, as well as suburban sports airfield with an opportunity to enjoy parachute jump or sightseeing flight.
In the close vicinity of the town you can find the largest Slovak ice cave, 25 splendid waterfalls in 9 accessible rocky gorges, more than 300 km of marked hiking trails, 400 km of cycling trails, ski centres, cross-country skiing and nordic walking trails or 13 educational trails.
In the nearby Slovak Paradise you can experience true wilderness. From May 1 to October 31, the admirers of water tourism can enjoy boating on the Hornád river in one of the most attractive parts of the national park – the longest river canyon in Slovakia (Prielom Hornádu, almost 12 km long). You can explore amazing ´Via Ferrata´ that will enchant you with its wild beauty and unique environment. The Kyseľ gorge is passable thanks to new educational trail Kyseľ – Ferrata of the Mountain Rescue Service. This secured trail is open from June 15 to October 31.
