In the context of production

Customers’ attitude towards packaging has been changing in the past few years. „Modern and customer-oriented businesses no longer believe that the cheapest packaging is the best one to be put on the counter,“ says Július Mazán, Innovation Manager at Smurfit Kappa Obaly Štúrovo.

In the context of production and supply processes, products must be viewed in a complex way as an integral and harmonious part of the entire supply chain. Nevertheless, many businesses still separate individual packaging components and processes and try to optimize costs related to packaging components and partial services. However, perfect understanding of the entire supply chain process creates large savings in costs and time. Nowadays, suppliers operating on global markets present time savings as one of their key assets.

At Smurfit Kappa Group, global packaging development is performed in several ways. For example, the fast-growing e-commerce segment that represents packaging used for goods bought online and their subsequent distribution from one corner of the world to another in a fast and safe way, while creating emotional experience for the customer who opens the packaging. This segment reaches global market growth expressed in double digits. This means that there is a specific platform for packaging requirements which cannot be compared to any of the existing forms of packaging. Therefore, such demanding challenges require significant investments into research and development that can be made only by large packaging corporations.

Modern and customer-oriented businesses no longer believe that the cheapest packaging is the best one to be put on the counter. Modern purchasers responsible for packaging seek advice of marketing experts and product developers. Added value of packaging and the possibility of increasing its useful value have been increasingly important. Modern purchasers in strongly customer-oriented businesses think globally and look for the most appropriate packaging solution for their customers to increase the added value of their products. This trend can be seen in private supermarket brands which used to be perceived as cheap and of lesser quality. Today, private brands try to attract medium and sometimes even higher value level of customers. Naturally, this cannot be done without changing the appeal and functional parameters of their packaging.

The global trend of packaging consumption per kilogram of product has been on the decline, all major international producers officially declare their wish to contribute to the decrease of negative global climate change. As economies have been stronger, consumption of goods has been on the rise along with consumption of packaging, while the lifecycle of products has been shortening. Smurfit Kappa Group with its support tools and experts continuously works on decreasing the consumption of packaging by means of optimizing packaging solutions.

Our experts primarily focus on reduction of waste and the share of packaging used compared to the total weight of the product and on the increase of production process efficiency. Smurfit Kappa Group publishes annual reports on its environmental policy and CO2 savings in its production and logistics processes.

Smurfit Kappa Obaly Štúrovo has decided to invest into the development of a Solution Centre which will present the most modern form of packaging solutions development focused on the perception of packaging by customers, consumer behaviour studies, shopping patterns and with the use of latest virtual technologies, the impact of individual packaging solutions on customers will be presented and simulated. Such innovation centre with virtual tools and experts is unique in this region and it gives the opportunity to all Smurfit Kappa Obaly Štúrovo customers to base their packaging strategy on verified expertise and minimize the expenses and the time they dedicate to the development of a new concept.
