Your water course and watershed manager in Slovakia
Slovak Water Management Enterprise, state owner enterprise was created in 1997 by the merger of four independent companies. From the organisation point of view, it consists of the Company Directorate and four branch offices in Bratislava, Banská Bystrica, Piešťany and Košice. The headquarters of the Company Directorate is in Banská Štiavnica. Each branch office controls watershed management units that carry out their activities directly on their respective watersheds. In total, there are 20 watershed management units operating under Slovak Water Management Enterprise, state owner enterprise, including two specialised plants. The company currently employs more than 3,600 workers.
The priority tasks of Slovak Water Management Enterprise, state owner enterprise include water-course management in the territory of the Slovak Republic and flood protection of the territory and citizens of Slovakia. Our company manages water-courses at a total length of 32,738km, with 287 water reservoirs, 2,811km of flood-protection dams, and a channel network of 1,812km. The total surface area of watersheds is 49,015km². We also operate Gabčíkovo Waterworks.
Flood protection is one of the most important public functions of Slovak Water Management Enterprise, state owner enterprise aimed at avoiding damages, restricting the extent of floods and influencing positively the course of floods. The citizens of the Slovak Republic have witnessed the destructive nature of floods many times, like only a year ago when storm rainfall transformed small water streams into big rivers and causing enormous property damage.
The company employs highly-specialised experts who continuously endeavour to make the citizens of Slovakia feel safe. We are aware of the fact that it is not possible to prevent floods completely. Nature is often much stronger than us. Our every-day task is to care for water-courses, clean them, remove waste so that water channels can drain off water, and hence, protect the lives, health and property of our citizens. Besides caring for water-courses, we also take care of water reservoirs. We currently have 287 reservoirs, among them Liptovská Mara, Oravská priehrada, Bukovec, Domaša, Ružín, Dobšiná, or Zemplínska Šírava.
Water reservoirs serve primarily a flood protection function or water storage to water supply. They can hold back vast amounts of water, for example, during storm rainfalls or seasonal snow thaw. This function is very important, because many floods occur in spring when winter snow melts. Some water reservoirs also serve as drinking water reserves. Moreover, our rivers have a high hydro-energy potential. Many hydraulic power plants have been built in Slovakia. In the 1960´s, the Váh Cascade was built on the Váh River, consisting of a system of dams and hydraulic power plants.
